Functional medicine is a revolutionary way of practicing medicine as it represents a dramatic shift from the traditional disease-centered model to a patient-centered approach that addresses the entire individual instead of an isolated set of symptoms. Spending time in getting to know their patients, functional medicine doctors evaluate the interactions between genes and environment. Unlike most physicians who practice acute-care medicine that relies on drugs to suppress symptoms, functional medicine doctors will concentrate on discovering the underlying causes/triggers that lead to dysfunction and apply strategies such as nutrition, exercise, and stress management to promote health and longevity. Viewing the body as an interconnected whole, a functional medicine doctor treats the fire, not the smoke.
At Aum Healing Center, Dr. Arora has chosen to use this scientific, evidence-based system of medicine as the foundation of her practice from the Institute of Functional Medicine.
Dr. Arora seeks to identify the biochemical characteristics that differentiate each patient and customize each plan of care accordingly. She views the body as an inter-connected whole, like a web, rather than as isolated, separate systems. Rather than seeing each patient as a collection of diseases or complaints, she concentrates on restoring the “whole patient” to their natural state: balanced and healthy.
Doctors who practice Functional Medicine identify the core imbalances that lead to disease. Thinking about the body like a chain, you might consider the weak link is where your symptoms develop. Lifestyle (diet, environmental exposures, stress, etc) pulls on the chain and can lead to breaks in the chain at the weakest link which could be your brain, adrenals, thyroid, joints, etc.
Keep in mind that you don’t need to be sick to benefit from Functional Medicine. The preventive aspect of this system of medicine not only can help you avoid sickness and disease, but many also help you get to that next level of health.
Your first visit with Dr. Arora is a transformative experience where you feel truly heard as she will listen to your story. She will conduct a comprehensive exam in which each aspect of your health is evaluated with an emphasis on the underlying cause of your symptoms. You will receive a custom tailored plan to guide you toward optimal well-being. During this time, she will cover everything you expect from a traditional visit, in addition to discussing the root causes of any ailments, your unique constitutional make-up and family history, as well as identifying the specific triggers impeding your path to wellness.
At the end of the visit, Dr. Arora may recommend laboratory work, saliva, urine or stool testing. Each of these tests is designed to give her insight into what is happening in your body so that she can assist you in transforming your health. Also at the end of the visit, she will discuss a plan with you regarding your future care. This may include an individualized detoxification program and starting to treating nutrient deficiencies. She schedules follow up appointments four weeks after your initial visit. This allows for the time necessary to perform these tests, and to obtain the results so that you can review them together.
Dr. Arora is compassionate and deeply committed to ensuring you are treated with the utmost respect. Her desire is to fully understand the unique combination of physical, biochemical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual components that make each patient unique. At Aum Healing Center, the mission is to empower you to take control of your health and feel your best each and everyday.
Identifying the Root
Causes of Disease
A New Type of Medical Practice
The modern health care center is a very busy place. Typically, new patient appointments (physicals) are scheduled for 30 minutes. Follow-up visits are usually 10 to 20 minutes. At Aum Healing Center, however, each new patient is scheduled for an initial one hour visit and follow-up visits are scheduled for 30-45 minutes (urgent care and 15 minute acute appointments are always available upon request). This allows Dr. Arora to get to know you, and to develop a customized plan of care that works in your life. You receive the personal attention you need and deserve.
